🎤 How to prepare for your next interview:
Here's what actually matters (and yes, the iced coffee is fine).
Do:
Bring the iced coffee. Whatever hydration you need is fine.
Tell your story of self, us, and now. In mission-driven work, you need to be ready to show why you're committed to this specific issue in this specific moment.
Know your unique value proposition. Research your competition to understand what is unique about your experience. Be prepared to say it in one, memorable sentence throughout your interview, and to reiterate it in your thank you note.
Network first. Talk to 1st or 2nd degree connections to learn what the org values and what the culture is like, so that you can understand how best to show up.
Ask thoughtful questions. Show you've researched the org and are weighing the fit on your end, too.
Use tools to prepare. Make a copy of Cultivate's Interview Prep Toolkit and practice with an AI interview coach.
Don't:
Use AI or read off a screen during the interview. Brief notes are fine, but practice until your story sounds natural. Bring a notebook rather than a screen if in person.
Always say "we." Take credit for what you specifically owned and accomplished.
Criticize past employers. This sector is small and people talk, so share what you learned and how you grew in past roles, rather than creating a perception of a lack of agency.
Count on references as the only check with past employers. Orgs often call people at your past employer that are not on your reference list, and background checks are fairly common. Keep your connections warm and focus on leaving a positive legacy.
